Okay, so I've never seen an ep of All My Children. That's never stopped me from reccing fic before, so I gave [livejournal.com profile] dreiser's fic a chance and I'm so glad I did.

A Thousand Glimpses by [livejournal.com profile] dreiser is a WIP, All My Children, Bianca/Reese, eventually Mature. This fic is taking its own very sweet time with the romance of Bianca and Reese, making the most of vivid details and long, drawn-out moments of connection that just feel so right. If you're in the mood for a long, lovely romance, this is the fic for you. If you liked [livejournal.com profile] dreiser's HP fic, Crazy Little Things (Hermione/Luna, long past the age of consent), you'll definitely enjoy this. The two are similar in their wistful, dreamy romance.

Also, it seems that I rec'ed a flocked fic ([livejournal.com profile] theholyinnocent's Corona Kid), but she has since posted and edited version of Part 1 to [livejournal.com profile] passion_perfect: The Adventures of La Carmichaela and the Corona Kid (Director's Cut), Part I . I guess we'll all have to wait for Part 2? *le sigh*
Just in case anyone missed these incredible intertwined fics over at [livejournal.com profile] passion_perfect:

Happy Halloween and The Gambler by [livejournal.com profile] heathers are meant to be companion pieces to [livejournal.com profile] theholyinnocent's The Adventures of La Carmichaela and the Corona Kid and all three are from the rare-pairing, Law and Order, SVU, Abbie/Olivia, Mature. Yes, I have an Angie Harmon...enthusiasm. And these two writers clearly share my enthusiasm obsession as does their usually confused, but hopelessly hooked Olivia who's barely hanging on for this Texas-tinged ride. Sexy and sultry with brilliant moments of LOL humor, these are fantastic interludes full of rich details and characterization... and Angie Harmon. Enjoy!
This post will probably be of the long, rambling variety. Some recs, some kvetching, possibly a rant.

First of all, dirt, you're not my favorite anymore. In fact, you'll be lucky if I even let it sit with me at lunch.L Word, yes, the Angela Robinson ep was a HUGE improvement, but that doesn't make you good television. BSG...don't even bother calling me until the chicks get to do something or Starbuck gets dead. Ugly Betty you're pretty, smart, and you make me laugh, but I'm sorry, I;ve been hurt too often. I just can't commit to you right now. The only show I watch with any regularity now is...Meerkat Manor And it's not really slashable.

Xena recs
From the newbie who's 7 years too late...
Endgame (uber, modern) and The Gift (uber) by Meghan O'Brien. Both are NC-17 and both are very well written, sexyhot and hopelessly romantic. I meant to rec these fics for Valentine's Day, but didn't have the time. The Gift is the story of a Commander who falls for the king's body slave. Endgame is the story of a womanizer who finally meets her match...and not in the way you'd expect. In a very real way. Also props to [livejournal.com profile] ein_myria for reccing these to me. Meghan O'Brien has several other stories that are also very well worth the read. Especially Truth or Dare if you're looking for a pwp.

The Tavernkeeper's Sister and Well of Sighs both by Ella Quince. Both are NC-17, both classic and both stories use amnesia as a plot device to very different ends. I'm convinced Ella Quince (yeah, I finally get it -- Eloquence) is the pen name of a professional writer. Her prose is just that good. It's efficient and elegant with moments of absolutely breathtaking writing. But beyond that, the stories are wonderful and her classic Xena and Gabrielle are flawless.

and if you're looking for pr0n, look no further than another [livejournal.com profile] ein_myria rec, Nights of Silk and Sapphire by Amber, NC-17. This is an uber tale and although it has a very well-imagined plot and uber characterization, this is really shamelessly the longest PWP ever written....except for that part where it has plot. Seriously. The author admits that this was an exercise in writing sex scenes for her because she wasn't comfortable with them. And there's LOTS of sex. Xena's character has a harem and she has sex with all of them. And they have sex with each other. And innocent Gabrielle has sex with herself and with the harem and finally with Xena. Did I mention pr0n. My only issue with this fic is that the author doesn't manage to make Xena/Gabrielle very special in the midst of all this sex. Still...did I mention the sex?

Birds of Prey
speaking of sex, We Used to Be Friends by [livejournal.com profile] jennyo is a scorchinghot NC-17, comicverse, Barbara/Katarina (implied Babs/Dick, Babs/Dinah). Surprisingly, not a VMars crossover. Love what [livejournal.com profile] jennyo does with canon here to create a femslashtic past for Barbara and Katarina that goes a long way toward explaining Babs/Dinah in the present. As usual, jennyo turns a PWP into something much deeper. Also check out her Stripped, another scorchicious Babs/Katarina

An Empirical Question by Harper is TVverse, PG-13. I couldn't imagine harper writing anything below an NC-17, but this was wonderfully done. I love Harper's Helena and Barbara awkwardly fumbling their way toward romance. There are moments of incredible humor and poignant vulnerability.

If you're just down for the hot GOGA, check out [livejournal.com profile] glossing's flawlessly executed vignettes for the Porn Battle, Wrapped up Like Candy, DC Comics, Mia/Grace and Competence and Donuts, Babs/Dinah comicverse. both at the same link, both NC-17

L&O:CI recs
Untitled, [livejournal.com profile] omiceti, NC-17, Barek/Eames. I really don't know how to talk about this fic and do it justice right now. Omiceti is a master at writing those fragile, painful moments full of vulnerability that we never see onscreen. This fic is painful and haunting and absolutely exquisite.
I don't normally do this, but I just noticed that a novel-length fic I recced LOOOOOOOOOONG ago won a place in the Royal Academy of Bards Hall of Fame even though it's not a Xena fic. At. All.

And Playing the Role of Herself by dabkey is hard to define. It's sort of an RPF Olivia/Abbie, Mariska/Angie Harmon and it's definitely NC-17. This fic is LOL funny with fantastic characterization and a really interesting story centered around two actresses on a TV procedural that looks an awful lot like LAO/SVU. The most surprising thing about this fic is how knowledgeable this writer is about the actual workings of TV production. They either work in some way in the entertainment industry or did some serious research. It's not all glamour and press shots, people. It's back-to-back 18 hour days shooting in the rain. My one problem with this fic is that it suffers a little from that romance-novel-writing trap that looks a lot like lesbian DRAMA. WAY too many contrived and coincidental obstacles in the way of their relationship. But it really is worth all the melodrama for this incredibly enjoyable and well-written fic.

ETA [livejournal.com profile] ralst tells me that this story is actually going to be published, which doesn't surprise me at all. It's much better than a lot of the 'romance' novels on the market.

Also, if anyone knows dabkey's LJ persona, please let me know so I can properly credit her.

And check out the other great and usually very long fics in the Royal Academy's Hall of Fame. It's a great way to get into the Xena fandom. And got to their incredibly helpful reviews. I don't agree with all of them, but they're on the money a lot of the time and it's unbelievably useful if you're trying to get started or keep up with the overwhelming amount of Xena fic out there. Make sure you keep clicking back to previous review pages for the full effect.

Also, speaking of novel-length fics, [livejournal.com profile] thrace_'s PG-13 crack!fic uber Sydney/Rachel in StarWars!verse has reached it's dramatic conclusion. This is sweeping, epic space opera with a lezzie Sydney Jedi Master. It just doesn't get any better. :)
Go leave the love. For both of these great writers!!
So, I asked for recs and I received. [livejournal.com profile] sravenk sent me to [livejournal.com profile] coolbyrne's site to read Out of Context, Olivia Benson/Nikki Wade, 18+. This was a real treat. It's so difficult to get crossovers right -- familiar characters in unfamiliar universes interacting with strangers -- but [livejournal.com profile] coolbyrne really gets it right. And more than that. This is a wonderfully paced full-fledged story that covers all its bases and manages flawless characterization (not to mention, dialogue!!!!). Olivia at sea and swimming in Larkhall works on so many levels as do the other familiar faces (the Julies, Denny, and Yvonne are all present). The dialog is right out of an ep of Bad Girls. Plus, [livejournal.com profile] coolbyrne Makes Them Make Out! and more.

Just checked [livejournal.com profile] ralst's P&P and Out of Context, Part 1 is up there too without the distracting formatting problems (? instead of ") of the first two parts on [livejournal.com profile] coolbyrne's site (this might just be an issue for Firefox users like me).

Hmmm, maybe I should start my own challenge, a Pimp Challenge. Pimp me your favorite stories and...well, I don't have any prizes, but, um, I'll squee over you?

ETA [livejournal.com profile] cabenson reminds me that if you're looking for more Bad Girls fic, check out [livejournal.com profile] the_pottingshed
because, really, nothing says Get Well (or Get it On) like pr0n:

[livejournal.com profile] jennyo brings scorchiliscious (shutup, I'm sick, I get to make up ridiculous adjectives!) Orders, Games, and Girl-Pleasing , Kara/Roslin, NC-17. Careful, you may burn yourself on this one.

and thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mantaraggio for bringing [livejournal.com profile] omiceti's PWP Untitled which is Barek/Eames, NC-17 and also wins at unbelievably fucking hot.

I'll report back on the healing powers of girl!pr0n later. Now it's back to reading my other heal-all, [livejournal.com profile] theholyinnocent(aka Vivian Darkbloom)'s Time Waster - Mel and Janice series. Yes, again. Yes, I've already recced this, but it really can't be recced enough. And yes, I'm currently writing an epic sequel that involves Francesca and the next incarnation of Xena/Mel. And YES, I'm that big of a fangirldork that I write fanfiction for fanfiction. Okay?!

Also, please feel free to follow [livejournal.com profile] mantaraggio's lead and take me to the crack/pr0n.
I noticed recently that I have overlooked one of my favorite writers in fandom. I mean, I haven't overlooked her at all -- I still read everything she writes -- but I've never actually recced her work. Which is very odd. And I have to chalk it up to my genius at overlooking the obvious.

[livejournal.com profile] fewthistle's The Last of the True Believers Alex/Olivia, Teen. This was one of the first A/O fics I ever read and it hooked me on the fandom...completely. It's been said that SVU fic has given these two characters and the series itself an emotional depth and gravity that the show itself hasn't even managed to scratch the surface of. And you can see why in this fic. Fewthistle's Alex is painstakingly drawn with details subtly drawn. This is no 2D blue-blood, but a woman of hidden depths and strength. Fewthistle knows how to draw out an important scene, how to make even the smallest details shimmer with meaning. I was so sure I had already recced this because it seemed so obvious. I mean, of course I recced The Last of the True Believers!!! but apparently, I didn't. So I'm trying to make up for it now.

More wonderful [livejournal.com profile] fewthistle:
Still Life Alex/Olivia, R on [livejournal.com profile] even_angels_, prompts by [livejournal.com profile] flying_peanuts is a haunting look at a haunted Olivia. Once again [livejournal.com profile] fewthistle can write those in-between places and moments with such clarity that I feel like I'm floating somewhere between this world and hers.

Si vis amari, ama is Alex/Serena, Teen. A wonderfully sweet and compelling moment at the very beginning of an Alex/Serena relationship. I'm a sucker for Serena fic (and they're so rare!) so I was overjoyed to see her owned by one of my fav writers.

actually, you know what? Just go read all of her fic. and leave lots of love.

eta okay, I'm now remembering that I have recced her work in the past (I think?), but I managed to overlook TLoTB, which is just shocking. Shocking!!!
Okay, not that I'm complaining (because I'm SO not), but could someone please explain where all of the Alex/Lorelai is coming from? I mean, I'm thankful because it's generating some truly wonderful fic, but...Alex/Lorelai?! I know there's a story in the birthplace of this odd pairing. But it is sort of perfect. I mean, of course, Alex would end up in Stars Hollow for Witness Protection. Wouldn't she?

No Frontiers by [livejournal.com profile] rysler PG-13 and Behind the Drawn Shade (which is a wild look at their relationship that begins at a performance of Wicked in NYC) and Queen of Sheba which is very Adult. I read these because they were [livejournal.com profile] rysler because my favorite writers can almost always convince me to try an odd pairing. I was completely surprised at what a good fit this crossover pairing is. It's quirky and odd with wry and clever humor and plenty of room for angst -- this is Alex in WP, running for her life after all.

The Curious Incident of the Chick at Easter-time by [livejournal.com profile] wizened_cynic in [livejournal.com profile] even_angels_ is Alex/Lorelai, PG-13? This fic does a wonderful job with the characterization and witty dialog. It reminds me of the strongest of SVU writing (not fanfic, the actual TV writing, specifically that ep with the murdered Tibetan woman and the foot fetishist -- w/Ilyana Douglas!) and the small amount of quirky GG that I've seen:
Sometimes I just want to hold your hand in public. That's all. I'm not asking for anything else. I know it's hard for you because you're from Iowa, and they don't have enough funding to teach people how to express their feelings in Iowa, since they spent all their money buying vowels for the name of their state.
See, Gilmore Girls, meets Alex in hiding. Brilliant!

Please let me know of any other Alex/Lorelai fic out there.

Also, I know I still owe a huge BSG mega-rec as well as a new SVU mega-rec and VMars. Soon...

eta Okay, [livejournal.com profile] kennedyismyhero tells me that Alex/Lorelai springs from a conversation she had with [livejournal.com profile] wizened_cynic in which they "talked about all the places SVU-Alex went while in Witness Protection, I suggested County General (ER) and somehow she got stuck on Stars Hollow. It mutated from there..."

Also, via [livejournal.com profile] thatfangirl, [livejournal.com profile] wizened_cynic has an entire site devoted to her Alex/Lorelai...'obsession' is a strong word, isn't it? We'll call in an 'enthusiasm'.

and [livejournal.com profile] rysler points to another really wonderfully bittersweet and LOL funny [livejournal.com profile] wizened_cynic A/L fic the truth, and cheesecake. [livejournal.com profile] wizened_cynic makes the best of this pairing, finding a way to bring in Alex's sadness and loneliness in WP, while finding a ridiculously charming partner to lighten things up...and drive her completely insane.
[livejournal.com profile] rysleralso points out that I have the wrong link to "Queen of Sheba", so I've corrected that. I hope. Sorry...
Where in the hell did this Barek/Eames pairing come from?!?! It has just exploded all over my flist all of a sudden. And I'm grateful, very grateful. But confused. I don't watch L&O: CI, so I know absolutely nothing about this pairing in canon, except the part about hot chicks with guns and gold shields. And that's all I have to know really. Still. Is Barek a new addition. All I know about L&O: CI is that I hate I hate D'Onofrio's emo!genius character so I don't watch.

Guns & Microscopes keeps delivering the goodies to my flist:

the circumstance of fired shots by [livejournal.com profile] quasiradiant, Barek/Eames, R.. I'm lazy tonight, so I'll just quote what I wrote in quasi's comments, 'cause really, that's all I need to say: "There is something so 'exquisitely' (there's that word again) quiet and understated about your work. I feel like I"m holding my breath because any sound I make could drown out your words. It creates this incredible tension that runs under and around the actual narrative. In other words, you don't have to write and describe action-packed scenes in order to keep me on the edge of my seat. Just describing the itch of the medical tape and the multi-colored lotion bottles is enough. You turn the everyday into moments full of power and potential.
and your language:
You look up, and her face is really close to yours, and when she looks at you, you both freeze there. She swallows, and you can hear it.

"I'm a little wounded, here," you whisper.

GAH! can you tell I have a HUGE litcrush on quasi? no. it's totally not obvious. really.

Another fantastic fic from that I JUST found the time to read:
Not So Soft by [livejournal.com profile] tremblingmoon is Alex/Olivia, R. I'm such a sucker for post-Loss fic and this one makes all of my Alex/Olivia dreams come true.Again, I'm being lazy tonight, so I'll just mirror what I said in comments to this fic, [livejournal.com profile] tremblingmoon does wonders with Alex's character, bringing her back from Witness Protection not completely intact and very much marked by the years she's been away. In fact that's one of the best things about this fic, the way the writer conveys the passage of time so effectively. It's such a tricky thing to do without resorting to obvious tricks, but tmoon does it with grace. Also, this line should tell you everything you need to know:
Helping her pack only a week ago, the young agents smiled at her kindly when they spoke, bright faces open and encouraging, like the words “friends” and “settle” and “life” were still part of her vocabulary. Like the syntax of affection, of safety, of comfort was something she hadn’t struggled for two years to forget.

Go. Give the Love to these great authors and the writers I haven't even gotten to yet. So much ficathon goodness, so little time. :)
See, this is why there aren't as many recs lately. 'Cause the ficathons are killing me with the good. For serious. I don't know if it's the nature of the 'thons, the mods (who deserve at least 90% of the credit and 100% of the femslash love), or the pressure of deadline, but the ficathons are producing nothing but good and often spectacular. Possibly, it's that many of my favorite writers are typically involved, or maybe it's the pressure of knowing you're writing a story for another incredible writer. Whatever it is, please ghod, don't ever let it stop.

Anything on [livejournal.com profile] femslash_minis EVER, [livejournal.com profile] femslash06 which makes me squee with joy and also squirm with stress, and now there's guns & microscopes
I haven't made it through all or many of these hot chicks with guns, but the first two I read were worth sitting my ass down on a Friday night when I should be out celebrating the fact that I quit today (woohoo!). I hate to even rec single stories from a ficathon because they're all good, so consider this a little taste of the bigger buffet of femslashtic goodness.

The Phone Rang by [livejournal.com profile] joran, Alex/Olivia, PG-13. [livejournal.com profile] joran's Alex and Olivia are women - bitter, fucked up and...distant. Really wonderful characterization. Alex is dealing with her dying mother but this isn't some overemotional, crying Alex. This is ice queen, jaded, bitter Alex. And Olivia is there for her the only way she knows how. This was exactly what I was looking for tonight: hot, complicated women in law enforcement.

the clean horse of our courage by [livejournal.com profile] omiceti, Barek/Eames, (L&O Criminal Intent), NC-17. Mira's fic is soooooo sexy on so many levels. From scene level down to the individual word choice, [livejournal.com profile] omiceti is teh hawt. All of the details, mismatched bra and panties, partially shaved legs, to the yes and no back and forth of a straight women trying to deal with her first time of a woman' are so fucking true.

you think about them wrapped around the handle of her Glock, think about the little shit she and Logan popped today, about how he wanted to kill her. About blood everywhere, Barek’s animated blood spilling in flat, matte crimson across the computer screen, and you can’t breathe.

You would have cared. You would have cared.

But it's all good at guns & microscopes so go, check it out. More fic arriving every minute. What is it about chicks with guns? And microscopes?
The Girl from Yesterday, by Sharon Bowers is Abbie/Of, Mature. It's backstory fic for Abbie Carmichael and it's just fantastic. One of those stories I find myself thinking about months later. Set in Texas, college sophomore Abbie is home for break and trying to deal with her rape and her feelings for her brother's girlfriend. The impeccable characterization sparkles, but it's the details that make this story resonate: Abbie's big sports family. The heat. The storms. The small-town flavor of all Abbie's interactions. This story is not easy or light, but it does a wonderful job of filling out Abbie's character and explaining her often belligerent attitude. It's a really spectacular read.

Also, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] joran, [livejournal.com profile] femslash_today, [livejournal.com profile] thenewhope, [livejournal.com profile] girlwank, [livejournal.com profile] ralst, and [livejournal.com profile] projectjulie's BSG MasterList (look to the top of the page for the link), there's not as much reason for me to rec anymore. So things will slow down (not stop!) on my end and I'll try to concentrate on older or more obscure femslash. This is a good thing. A VERY good thing. If you haven't subscribed to these groups, I highly recommend it. There's no better way to keep up on femslash across fandoms.

edited to correct the femslash comm's tag. ack!

Between Bombay and Manhattan, by [livejournal.com profile] fewthistle, Serena Southerlyn/Tracey Kibre, R. This is actually a series of ficlets that alternates POV to tell the story of this unlikely pairing. It begins with a PWP/one-night stand and Fewthistle deftly handles the gradual and awkward transition to (possibly) something more. The prose is wonderful and efficient (long, flowery description is just not my kink!) and the characterizations are right on, which means that this story is not an easy romance. These are two complicated, powerful women unused to emotional attachments whose lives revolve around their work. Fewthistle does a great job of letting us in on their guarded emotions and dysfunctional attempts at dating without amping up the drama
