How do I love my femslashers? Let me count the ways:

more smut under the cut )

Voyager, HP

Sep. 2nd, 2007 01:55 pm
More recs...that aren't from me. The femslash goddess herself, [livejournal.com profile] ralst, posts her own rec list. She even found an obscure fic I haven't seen in years (Snow).

Also, since strikethrough, I've had several requests for HP recs. I've recced a few in the past that I thought were outstanding, but this is really not my fandom. Particularly since it's nearly impossible to keep up with -- it's HUGE people!! I can barely keep up with all of the other fandoms in my life. HP would BURY me. Alive.

I'd suggest [livejournal.com profile] ein_myria for HP recs. She's got the goods.

Voyager

Sep. 1st, 2007 04:18 pm
Ahhhh, yes! My flist delivers again.

[livejournal.com profile] sr_m_grammatica brings the Voyager reccing goods! A few of these I meant to rec myself (the others I haven't read yet). Check out P&P for the opening ceremonies, etc.
My new obsession is updating my own [livejournal.com profile] alien_altars-inspired rec list...too frequently. I think this is proof that inspiration and often brilliance can come from a new approach to what should be a tired old cliché. Or it's proof that I'm insane. This is also, as usual, a cry for help. In the sense that I'm always looking for more cliché fic to add to my collection. Bring 'em if you've got 'em. Support my madness.

My list again:

About to die, must have hot sex
Like You Really Like It by Xena's Little Bitch is Xena/Gabrielle, Mature, impending apocalypse...again.

Aliens made us do it
Upset, Upended, and Upgraded is SG-1, Pink Rabbit. Also from the SG-1 fandom is Another Sip of Wine by JSwrdsmth.

Amnesia

Fade Out to Black by [livejournal.com profile] bluflamingo is Mature, Laura Cadman/Katie Brown. Wonderful fic!

I just recced two Xena fics by Ella Quince that met this criteria:

The Tavernkeeper's Sister and Well of Sighs both by Ella Quince. Both are NC-17, both classic and both stories use amnesia as a plot device to very different ends. I'm convinced Ella Quince (yeah, I finally get it -- Eloquence) is the pen name of a professional writer. Her prose is just that good. It's efficient and elegant with moments of absolutely breathtaking writing. But beyond that, the stories are wonderful and her classic Xena and Gabrielle are flawless.

and there's also the wonderful Purest Love by Seana James.

and Everything You Know by Nut56

Bound by Bailey B, J/7, Voyager. There's also Symphony Twisted also J/7.

There is No Fucking in Hades by [livejournal.com profile] mirabile_dictu is SGA, Teyla/Elizabeth, NC-17 and if I haven't recced this already I should have. It's EXQUISITE!

Je me souviens by [livejournal.com profile] queen_zulu is Buffy/Faith, mature.

In the SGA fandom a standout from [livejournal.com profile] alien_altars: Fade Out to Black by [livejournal.com profile] bluflamingo is Laura Cadman/Katie Brown and the author deftly uses amnesia to essentially recreate Atlantis for Cadman. Amazingly done.

Another brilliant fic from the SGA fandom, must be something here by [livejournal.com profile] lilysaid is Teyla/Sora, Mature.

Aphrodisiacs/Sex pollen
from the Xena fandom there's The Enchantment by friction.

Daring by Blaze is SG-1, Sam/Janet.

Caught masturbating
The Water's Edge by Tegan Jovanka, Xena, NC-17.

Everyone thinks we're doing it<
Rumours of Love by Ella Quince is Xena/Gab, Mature.

Forced marriage
From SG1 and [livejournal.com profile] alien_altars there's the hilarious and entertaining Hey Baby, Let's go to Pegasus" which is Sam Carter/Laura Cadman.

Forced to share a bed/sleeping bag/tent
Fuzzy morning after or "do you remember what we did last night?"
Genderswitch (one or both women is turned into a man)

Huddling for warmth

Snow by Rebelgirl is Voyager, T/7

Insomnia

Jealousy
Family by Harriet (SG-1, Sam/Janet) is the first fic to come to mind for this category.

Rumours of Love by Ella Quince is Xena, Mature. This could also be characterized as Everyone Thinks We're Doing It and is.

Kid fic
ugh!
eta okay, I've changed my mind. You MUST check out [livejournal.com profile] wizened_cynic's AJ fic (scroll to the bottom and start with the fic there). This is the crackiest crack!verse ever. This version of the crackverse has Alex knocked up at 16 and A.J. is the result. The rest of the cracky Alex/Lorelai is told from kidpov.

Multiple universes (the characters meet versions of themselves from a parallel universe)
Wow, I just realized that I completely misunderstood this category. Most of these are one character meeting another version of another character from another universe. uh, yeah.
I think SG-1 pretty much pwns this category. As One by Harriet has an alternate Janet coming back.
and Everything by Pink Rabbit involve alternate Sam's and are two of my fav fics in this fandom.

Tempus Fugit by me (yes, I'm a walking cliche!) is BTVS, Willow/Tara, Faith/Buffy.

The Broken Thread by Ella Quince is Xena, Mature.

Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained by Tonya Muir is Xena, Mature. Xena chooses to stay in the "Remember Nothing" AU with the slave, Gabrielle.

16 Hours by Bailey B, J/7, Voyager.

Pregnancy (hey, women can get pregnant too)
[livejournal.com profile] wizened_cynic's Alex/Lorelei fpreg Rosemary, Rosemary over in the [livejournal.com profile] bun_in_oven comm devoted to that strange fic creature known as fpreg.

Found Family is SGA Teyla/Sora

That Unfamiliar Activity by Xena's Little Bitch is Xena, Mature.

Baby, the Skies'll Be Blue is Imagine Me & You, Rachel/Luce, PG-13, mystical lesbian pregnancy!

It's Yours is Ash/Scribbs, PG-13, Murder in Suburbia (of course!) by the goddess herself, [livejournal.com profile] ralst.

Slave fic
I'm pretty sure Xena's Conqueror stories pwn this category so I'll only mention a few:
The Conqueror's Touch by Xena's Little Bitch.
Penance by Penumbra
The Gift by Megan O'Brien is uber.
The Gift by Carola "Ryûchan" Eriksson is PG-13 and turns the tables making Xena the slave. Also by Carola is Gladiator which is warrior!Gabrielle hotness!
Tale One:Journey's End by LJ Maas is essentially a sexfest that goes a bit crazy at the end in search of a plot. But definitely, entirely of the hothothot!!
Conquering Liaisons is another Conqueror fic.

Telepathy/Soulbond
Tether by Harriet is SG-1, Sam/Janet. Not my fav Harriet fic, but still good.
A Warrior By Any Other Name by Melissa Good is actually only the first part of this enormous Xena, soulbond epic.

Già Cogli Angeli, Ivanova? by Penumbra is Babylon 5, Susan/Talia.
also Babylon 5, Susan/Talia Night by Metis. Hot telepathic sex in a shuttlecar.

Trapped together in a cave, shack, etc
A Moment of Truth by Curiositee is Xena, Mature.

Apparently, "trapped together in a turbolift" is such a cliché in the Voyager fandom that [livejournal.com profile] ralst's P&P has devoted an entire page to these fics: Turbolift Stories.

Undercover as a prostitute
I got nothing. sorry.

Undercover as lovers or a married couple
Chicago 5am by L.N. James is Xena uber/original and it's a great story with a smokinghot love scene.

Not sure if this counts, but Weir and Cadman posing as a couple in order to stay together on a Wraith slave planet is surely worth something: A Place Called Home by [livejournal.com profile] muppetmanda is SGA, Weir/Cadman, Mature.

Undercover(s) by [livejournal.com profile] racethewind10 is CSIMiami, Natalia/Calleigh, WIP. A serial killer is targeting lesbian couples: one blonde w/blue eyes, one brunette w/dark eyes. hmmm, sounds like most of the f/f pairings on my list.

Dating Undercover by [livejournal.com profile] the_girl_20 is WMC, Jill/Cindy, R.

Undercover by [livejournal.com profile] mercury_chkita is WMC again, Lindsay/Cindy, R. Same prompt from ralst.

Virginity or virgin sacrifice
I'm not sure if this is what the mods had in mind, but Ella Quince's Return from Poteidaia is an extraordinary first-time/virginity fic. Then again, half the Xena fics are first-time fics.

Voyuerism

We almost died, must have hot sex
Near Miss by Meghan O'Brien is Xena, uber, Mature (of course!).

I'm Right Here by Rebecca Hall is X/G, Mature.

Yenta
Yes! My first Yenta fic! Profiler, Profiled by [livejournal.com profile] lysachan is Criminal Minds, Emily/JJ, PG-13. Garcia's the yenta...of course.

That's all I've got now. I'll add more later...

edited to remove the first time ever I've had to remove a fic. I thought it ended at the second installment (it really, really should have), but the author added two more parts of truly horrific (as in disturbingly violent including rape scenes) stuff. I don't get it. It was a great fic...

You should also check out [livejournal.com profile] ein_myria's very own femslash cliché rec list. There is some overlap, but a LOT less that you'd think.
Xena rec of the day;
Like You Really Like It by Xena's Little Bitch is NC-17. Falling back on old favorites because this rec a day thing is a bit overwhelming (I'm having to reread lots of stuff which is fun, but time-consuming). This is a short, hot fic about Xena, Gabrielle, the end of the world (again) and sex. Yes, the formatting is a little wonky, but it's still fabulously written, touching apocalypsesexfic!

Voyager
I really enjoyed Reality by sydneysmom. It's B/7, Mature and it's part of the Femslash Advent Calendar and it's a gloriously angsty and romantic fic. I've recced fic from sydneysmom in other fandoms (BSG) before and this is just as well-written. Seven is held prisoner and tortured so ingeniously that she's not sure what is real anymore. B'Elanna helps her refind the real.
via [livejournal.com profile] ein_myria:

For those of you who haven't yet checked, Campus has finally updated and concluded. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, Campus, by Anik La Chev is sort of an uber Janeway/Seven, Voyager, but more of an original piece of fiction with characters who strongly resemble (physically and personality-wise) the two Voyager characters. It's NC-17 and it's very, very long and absolutely addictive. Campus is the story of Joanna, who flies in to take a job as assistant to the formidable Professor Eliane Darhayne. Sparks fly immediately as the two fight their way to a sort of detente. Although this is certainly a romance set in the cutthroat world of academics, Campus really takes its time lovingly detailing all of the characters and the world of the institute in Leipzig in which it is set. In fact, two secondary characters who begin as supporting cast really become a parallel storyline by the end and I found myself as enthralled with their story as the primary relationship of Joanna/Eliane. Campus is one of those fics that completely draws you in and you find yourself personally and intimately engaged with these people who feel real. I'm so glad La Chev found the time to bring it to a conclusion. I was up all night reading the final chapters.

[livejournal.com profile] ein_myria offers a critical review and discussionhere and she makes some excellent points (especially about the hurried feel of the end), but makes sure to let us know that it was definitely worth the wait. And it was. Every excruciating page check of it. Of course I wanted more, but it had to end sometime and somewhere. *g*

eta
I'm not sure I'm communicating how big a deal this fic is, so I'll repost [livejournal.com profile] partly_bouncy's insightful comment:
"For Campus, I don't think any ending would have been satisfying. :( )I stayed up to around midnight to read, then woke up around 6am and continued to read.) Seriously, it was like a lovely soap opera set in an academic setting with the essence of characters I loved, handling them in a way that the universe they were originally from could not.

It was one of those stories where, even near the end, I didn't want it to end because there are places it could have gone on, where it felt like the characters could have developed. Some authors have a tendency to, especially after the number of pages written and the length of time having passed, get to a point where things are tedious and need to wrap up. It didn't feel that way here. I kind of wanted to know that these characters were safe, happy and that they'd be together. The conclusion left it open that Darhayne is capable of change but that she might not. (I suppose in a way that is fitting in that Voyager seemed to end the same way.)

I liked how it actually actively dealt with queer identity and relationships. A lot of that doesn't seem to get dealt with in corners I read in, nor in my fiction that I buy. If it does get dealt with, there are no real consequences beyond the personal ones of dating. That adds a huge level of realism and the critique you linked to picked up on that. Happy.

And I still feel guilty for the happy happy joy joy. This was more exciting to read and I anticipated more than the last Harry Potter book due out soon."

eta oops, spelled Leizig wrong.

so what inspired this archaeological dig into a fandom I rarely visit? [livejournal.com profile] aqua_blurr's Indirectives (J/7, reference to J/C, 7/C), Mild R) written for the Die, J/C, Die contest (an idea I can totally get behind, btw). It's a vivid stream-of-consciousness account from multiple POVs of this fucked up love triangle that ends with J/7 OTP promise.

Mojor's Symphony Twisted , J/7, T is an ambitious and plot-driven story with an interesting concept and some great characterization. And, yes, they make out. And more. The narrative feels a little rushed at times, but it's a very good read. Plus, it has the dubious honor of being the only fanfiction.net fic ever to make my rec list. *streamers*

Where the Dream Takes You, by nejvit. J/7, Mature is a thoughtful, well-drawn romance that really takes its time with the narrative and the characters.

DiNovia's Arte/Scienze, J/7, PG is an artfully done piece about 7 finding her humanity (and Janeway) in the artist's studio.

Small Dreams of a Scorpion by tigermoth26 (aka [livejournal.com profile] eight_leg_dog) is the first in a short series of J/7 ficlets that take on the darker side of 7's borgness, something I wish we'd seen more of in fic. Wonderful language, fascinating characterization, and no happy ending...well, unless you're Borg and live to assimilate. Very Mature. Resistance is futile.

Night by Metis, Susan Ivanova/Talia WintersVery Mature. Hot sex in a deserted shuttle car. Great parallels between the sex and Ivanova's 'coming out' as a psi to Winters, but really it's all about the hot sex isn't it?

eta in the interest of fairness (or something), I should mention Lunacy's Reviews which has links to a lot of very popular Voyager (and Xena) fics that aren't, for the most part, really my cup of tea. They do have have legions of fans, however, and I don't. (Lisa Countryman's fic comes to mind as well as G.L. Dartt's).

also, ETA [livejournal.com profile] theholyinnocent points to this site full of recs to Xena, Voyager and BTVS fic. See, this is what I'm talking about, people - femslashy teamwork!! There is no I in team! She also has a W. joke on her LJ right now that will make you laugh if you don't cry. Or possibly both at the same time.

and ETA [livejournal.com profile] projectjulie, girlslash goddess, also chimed in with her own Voyager Master List, which contains some of my fav Voyager fic (click on the j/7 and voyager tags for more posts) including Anik LeChev (swoon) and Bailey's fic. Plus, fic and links I've never seen, which is always of the good.
Tonight, a few rec's from the Voyager universe, mainly because I've just discovered Beacham's work (I'm always the last one to the party).

All J/7
Tempus Omnia Revelat is a dark, haunting look at J/7's dysfunctional relationship that becomes even more dysfunctional when Janeaway is taken prisoner. This is not fluff and it's longer than your average fic, but well worth the investment. Beacham can really write and you get a sense that she knows her stuff when it comes to the science, not to mention the incredible detail that give all of her stories extra depth and resonance.

To get more of Beacham's truly inspired fic, you'll have to venture onto the VOYsite and scroll down. Yes, it's a terrible and frustrating site, but the fic is well worth it. Novissima Verba may be my favorite although it's definitely the longest of the bunch. It's set after End Game. Janeaway once again must risk everything to save the Borg (not to mention herself) who's not at all interested in being saved from the former prison/mining planet she's exiled herself to. This is an incredibly complex and compelling story and Beacham's Seven is definitely one of my favorite characterizations of the Borg ever. Her Janeaway is equally inspired: Tough, brittle, dauntless, and hopelessly in love.

When the hell did I become such a Voyagerfic ho? ::shakes head in disbelief:: I'm just a sucker for good writing. ;)
Rules of the Game by Bailey B (Voyager, J/7). It's a flash site so I can't link directly to the story. Long, well-written and great characterization (you've probably figured out that I won't rec it if the characters aren't just right). post End Game. Janeway's on trial and in therapy (with Deanna Troi!), Seven's engaged and where the hell is that happily ever after? It's there, you just have to get through all the angst first. Bailey's strident, over-confident Janeway coming to terms with her emotions is wonderful and her Seven is just the right mix of cold Borg and struggling new human. :)

I figure it's about time I give something back to femslash, so here it is, the first of several installments.

Novel length

Terra Firma by Tulipp. BTVS, Willow/Tara -- Tulipp can write people! A Tara resurrection story. Tara returns to Sunnydale and it's up to the Scoobies to figure out how and why. Beautifully done. Julie/Tulipp was the writer who made me go, "holy shit, you can do that with fanfiction?!?" It's that good.

Campus by Anik LeChev. über 7/Janeaway. Set in the cutthroat, high octane world of...academia. Actually, it's so über, it's..definitely a different universe entirely. I've never even watched Voyager, but this came highly recommended and it's worth it. It's a fascinating story by someone who obviously knows their way around universities, not to mention the English language. A cast of well-drawn original characters rounds out a truly amazing piece of fic. Ms. LeChev is also responsible for Game's End(J/7) a really remarkable answer to End Game, the final ep of Voyager. Characterization is just pitch perfect.

Cooking on High by Creme Brulee is Xena uber. Again, not my fandom, but god this is funny and complex and hot. Set in the cutthroat, backstabbing world of...haute cuisine. Xena (French) is a crazy chef with a checkered past and Gabrielle is the hapless waitress who complicates everything.

novella
Monique Bartok is one of my new favorites. Sere Nere (L&O/SVU Alex/Olivia) is a realistic and haunting look at what might have happened if Alex had returned to NYC. Realistic because they don't just fall into each other's arms and make nice. It's awkward and uncomfortable and lovely. Also, Crash and Yearn (CSI Catherine/Sarah) takes one of my least favorite shows and pairings and does something remarkable with it. Mad props to Ms. Bartok.

Fluff

Third Time's the Charm by Jennifer Oksana. BTVS/Angel, Willow/Fred. Ms. O can write sweetness too. And damn her dialogue's good!

The Unbearable Weirdness of Being by klynkey. (Gilmore Girls, Paris/Rory). Spot on characterization and LOL funny/cute because how could it not be?

PWP
Final Exam (links to Lesbo Street Cred, tommo's site) by Tommo. BTVS, W/T. It's enormous, but every chapter is essentially a PWP based loosely around a different S3 ep. The premise: Tara comes to Sunnydale High and meets Willow. A smut classic in the W/T ship. But don't just read it for the smut, Tommo's characterization and writing is truly inspired and her sense of humor will have you howling out loud. Her take on Gingerbread (Cookie Monsters in the Final Exam[verse) is just laugh out loud stuff, but with a bittersweet twist. Willow is burned at the stake because she's gay, not because of witchcraft. The only drawback, they're only available as .doc downloads. Well worth it though.

Pseudoscience by Jennifer Oksana the master of PWP. BTVSxAngel, Willow/Fred. Jennifer O is one wonderfully sick girl and she can write like an angel. It doesn't hurt that I really like the W/F pairing and she just nails the characterization. Also, if you're into het or slash, Ms. O has tons of it on her site.
