A few recs between papers and exams:

First, Xena:
The Pappas Journals I and II by Elaine Sutherland is Mature, Mel/Janice. Someone recommended this to me long ago ([livejournal.com profile] theholyinnocent? [livejournal.com profile] adastranot?) and it was well-worth the wait. This story is exquisite and powerful. This is a darker Mel/Janice with hints of sunlight. Told from Mel's POV, it takes these two from war-torn, besieged Athens into the Hell of Nazi Germany. I'll admit, I cried my eyes out over this one. Beautiful and haunting, incredibly well-written, with subtle, deft touches of the Bard's ancient Greek in translation. And what she does with the scrolls is...inspired. I'm totally floored. All hail Elaine Sutherland!

Then on to SVU and LAO:
24 Frames by [livejournal.com profile] theholyinnocent is Mature, Alex/Olivia. [livejournal.com profile] wizened_cynic reminded me that this fic was absolutely exquisite and needed to be recced. It's Alex and Olivia told in quick, breathless vignettes. Beautiful.

Four Things Serena Southerlyn Never Said by [livejournal.com profile] fewthistle is Serena/of, Mature. Fewthistle's back! And working her usual miracles with underdeveloped characters. Her Serena has soul and depth and the writing as always is hauntingly lovely.

Misc/RPF?
Lamplighter by [livejournal.com profile] theholyinnocent is Harper Lee (from Capote played by the glorious Katherine Keener)/OF and it's Mature. [livejournal.com profile] theholyinnocent didn't know whether to characterize this as RPF or fanfic and I'm not sure either, but for anyone with a Harper Lee fixation or a Keener one, this is the fic for you. It has [livejournal.com profile] theholyinnocent's usual gorgeous prose and a few scenes from the life of a master storyteller who only wrote one novel. Also, I'm a sucker for Southerners transplanted to the big bad City...because I was one once.

I know, I promised fluff and I delivered the heavy. Again. Sorry. You'd think with all of this work I'd want something light, but, no. *sigh* Fluff soon.
I noticed recently that I have overlooked one of my favorite writers in fandom. I mean, I haven't overlooked her at all -- I still read everything she writes -- but I've never actually recced her work. Which is very odd. And I have to chalk it up to my genius at overlooking the obvious.

[livejournal.com profile] fewthistle's The Last of the True Believers Alex/Olivia, Teen. This was one of the first A/O fics I ever read and it hooked me on the fandom...completely. It's been said that SVU fic has given these two characters and the series itself an emotional depth and gravity that the show itself hasn't even managed to scratch the surface of. And you can see why in this fic. Fewthistle's Alex is painstakingly drawn with details subtly drawn. This is no 2D blue-blood, but a woman of hidden depths and strength. Fewthistle knows how to draw out an important scene, how to make even the smallest details shimmer with meaning. I was so sure I had already recced this because it seemed so obvious. I mean, of course I recced The Last of the True Believers!!! but apparently, I didn't. So I'm trying to make up for it now.

More wonderful [livejournal.com profile] fewthistle:
Still Life Alex/Olivia, R on [livejournal.com profile] even_angels_, prompts by [livejournal.com profile] flying_peanuts is a haunting look at a haunted Olivia. Once again [livejournal.com profile] fewthistle can write those in-between places and moments with such clarity that I feel like I'm floating somewhere between this world and hers.

Si vis amari, ama is Alex/Serena, Teen. A wonderfully sweet and compelling moment at the very beginning of an Alex/Serena relationship. I'm a sucker for Serena fic (and they're so rare!) so I was overjoyed to see her owned by one of my fav writers.

actually, you know what? Just go read all of her fic. and leave lots of love.

eta okay, I'm now remembering that I have recced her work in the past (I think?), but I managed to overlook TLoTB, which is just shocking. Shocking!!!
Where in the hell did this Barek/Eames pairing come from?!?! It has just exploded all over my flist all of a sudden. And I'm grateful, very grateful. But confused. I don't watch L&O: CI, so I know absolutely nothing about this pairing in canon, except the part about hot chicks with guns and gold shields. And that's all I have to know really. Still. Is Barek a new addition. All I know about L&O: CI is that I hate I hate D'Onofrio's emo!genius character so I don't watch.

Guns & Microscopes keeps delivering the goodies to my flist:

the circumstance of fired shots by [livejournal.com profile] quasiradiant, Barek/Eames, R.. I'm lazy tonight, so I'll just quote what I wrote in quasi's comments, 'cause really, that's all I need to say: "There is something so 'exquisitely' (there's that word again) quiet and understated about your work. I feel like I"m holding my breath because any sound I make could drown out your words. It creates this incredible tension that runs under and around the actual narrative. In other words, you don't have to write and describe action-packed scenes in order to keep me on the edge of my seat. Just describing the itch of the medical tape and the multi-colored lotion bottles is enough. You turn the everyday into moments full of power and potential.
and your language:
You look up, and her face is really close to yours, and when she looks at you, you both freeze there. She swallows, and you can hear it.

"I'm a little wounded, here," you whisper.

GAH! can you tell I have a HUGE litcrush on quasi? no. it's totally not obvious. really.

Another fantastic fic from that I JUST found the time to read:
Not So Soft by [livejournal.com profile] tremblingmoon is Alex/Olivia, R. I'm such a sucker for post-Loss fic and this one makes all of my Alex/Olivia dreams come true.Again, I'm being lazy tonight, so I'll just mirror what I said in comments to this fic, [livejournal.com profile] tremblingmoon does wonders with Alex's character, bringing her back from Witness Protection not completely intact and very much marked by the years she's been away. In fact that's one of the best things about this fic, the way the writer conveys the passage of time so effectively. It's such a tricky thing to do without resorting to obvious tricks, but tmoon does it with grace. Also, this line should tell you everything you need to know:
Helping her pack only a week ago, the young agents smiled at her kindly when they spoke, bright faces open and encouraging, like the words “friends” and “settle” and “life” were still part of her vocabulary. Like the syntax of affection, of safety, of comfort was something she hadn’t struggled for two years to forget.

Go. Give the Love to these great authors and the writers I haven't even gotten to yet. So much ficathon goodness, so little time. :)
See, this is why there aren't as many recs lately. 'Cause the ficathons are killing me with the good. For serious. I don't know if it's the nature of the 'thons, the mods (who deserve at least 90% of the credit and 100% of the femslash love), or the pressure of deadline, but the ficathons are producing nothing but good and often spectacular. Possibly, it's that many of my favorite writers are typically involved, or maybe it's the pressure of knowing you're writing a story for another incredible writer. Whatever it is, please ghod, don't ever let it stop.

Anything on [livejournal.com profile] femslash_minis EVER, [livejournal.com profile] femslash06 which makes me squee with joy and also squirm with stress, and now there's guns & microscopes
I haven't made it through all or many of these hot chicks with guns, but the first two I read were worth sitting my ass down on a Friday night when I should be out celebrating the fact that I quit today (woohoo!). I hate to even rec single stories from a ficathon because they're all good, so consider this a little taste of the bigger buffet of femslashtic goodness.

The Phone Rang by [livejournal.com profile] joran, Alex/Olivia, PG-13. [livejournal.com profile] joran's Alex and Olivia are women - bitter, fucked up and...distant. Really wonderful characterization. Alex is dealing with her dying mother but this isn't some overemotional, crying Alex. This is ice queen, jaded, bitter Alex. And Olivia is there for her the only way she knows how. This was exactly what I was looking for tonight: hot, complicated women in law enforcement.

and

the clean horse of our courage by [livejournal.com profile] omiceti, Barek/Eames, (L&O Criminal Intent), NC-17. Mira's fic is soooooo sexy on so many levels. From scene level down to the individual word choice, [livejournal.com profile] omiceti is teh hawt. All of the details, mismatched bra and panties, partially shaved legs, to the yes and no back and forth of a straight women trying to deal with her first time of a woman' are so fucking true.

you think about them wrapped around the handle of her Glock, think about the little shit she and Logan popped today, about how he wanted to kill her. About blood everywhere, Barek’s animated blood spilling in flat, matte crimson across the computer screen, and you can’t breathe.

You would have cared. You would have cared.

But it's all good at guns & microscopes so go, check it out. More fic arriving every minute. What is it about chicks with guns? And microscopes?

Sickly so this is a quickie:

[livejournal.com profile] omiceti's glorious and haunting, One Hundred Things That Might Have Happened, Alex/Olivia, R, is up on LJ and recently updated. To recap, this is a series of mind-blowingly well-crafted drabbles (yes, I know, and I don't do drabbles:) set in a non-linear framework. Omiceti is a master of characterization and she captures moments that feel like fragments of memory. And, like memory, they vary from important moments to the trivial, giving them all an incredible resonance. Nothing here feels unimportant. Even the most trivial event feels like a potentially critical clue.

Objects in the Mirror by cgb (aka [livejournal.com profile] mandysbitch) is Alex/Olivia, Mature. This is one of those fics that feels real. Alex and Olivia are real women, with real insecurities and real jobs that require a great deal of their time and energy. Their lives are complicated and so is their relationship or lack thereof. I've said this before but it's so nice to see these two written as complicated adults.

Olivia is real. Not a phase or a fashion.

Clearly she's talking about Butchy McFabulous, not Oliska.

eta - if you know cgb and s/he has an LJ, please comment and let me know so I can credit this writer properly (and search for more of their fic :).

update - [livejournal.com profile] projectjulie informs me that cgb is actually [livejournal.com profile] mandysbitch so I'm changing the original post.

via suckeredin and lovetheshallow (I think) on the TWoP boards some incredible new SVU fic. All Alex/Olivia:

One Hundred Things that Might Have Happened by Mira. Alex/Olivia, Mira. A series of short drabbles that form a non-linear and completely arresting story. It isn't finished yet, but that shouldn't stop you. This is an exceptional piece of writing and it's like piecing together a beautifully sculpted puzzle. Plus, lines like this:

It feels nice, this heat between her legs. Innocent, like a crush. Almost like normal, almost like she can want someone without feeling like a perp.

Also by Mira, an incredible (and complete!) Loss fic, The Summary of Errors that will break your fucking heart.

Mira is the new black. :)

remember, feedback=teh love so please leave it for these incredible writers.

Wow, so much fic going on right now. So many WIPs I'm following until they're finalized and WTF's going on with LJ Comments?!?!!? If you're wondering why I haven't responded to comments or to your fic, it's because I can't. LJ has the big hate-on for me lately. Not getting email alerts to new comments and it takes about an hour for me to post comments. For real.

I know everyone's pining for A/O and although this probably only counts halfway, [livejournal.com profile] giantessmess's Obsession, Alex/Olivia and Alex/Casey, R is a haunted and haunting beautiful story and a complete head trip. Writer's warnings: Angst, some violence, darkfic, supernatural themes. Apologies to Casey fans. It's not what you think. Not even close...

Warning to [livejournal.com profile] ralst and other A/O OTP shippers: probably not A/O enough for your tastes.

BDSM

Sep. 15th, 2005 01:43 pm
I'm sure some of you have noticed a glaring omission in my recs -- BDSM, non-con, darkfic, and hardcore. And by BDSM I do not mean olivia tying alex's hands to the bedpost. I mean the serious stuff. You know, the stuff that exists beyond PWP in that space where there's violence, very little to no emotional content, and/or... I think I'm wading into a semantic morass here. help.

Semantics aside, there is some beautifully written BDSM and hardcore fic out there that I'm ignoring because it's just not my kink. No judgments, no moral issues here, I just don't like reading it. That simple. And I'm not going to make myself read something just because I should. Femslash should never be broccoli.

So, if any of you femslashy writers and pimps have recs to the harder stuff in any fandom, let me know and I'll post the links or point to your LJ so that the non-vanilla types can get their kink on. Gracias.

eta [livejournal.com profile] thelastgoodname, broccoli lover and ficpimp extraordinaire, reminds me that she recs bdsm and darkfic when she can find it. And that [livejournal.com profile] hp_girlslash features a good bit of it, including one last weekend. But don't just go to her LJ for the bdsm, all of her recs are the good stuff. The REALLY good stuff.

also ETA [livejournal.com profile] slcadet reminds me that maybe I do like some BDSM after all. Maybe the issue is that I'm just less willing to read not-so-good BDSM fic to find the good. How did she accomplish this? by pointing me to a fic I'd loved and lost, [livejournal.com profile] trancer21's Switch at Passion & Perfection (where else?). Alex/Olivia, NC-17 explores the math problem: what if two tops meet and fall for each other? okay, maybe it's not a math problem although there is definitely physics (and politics) involved. [livejournal.com profile] slcadet also has BDSM fic and recs on her own LJ (which I have yet to read) and has even co-authored a recent addition to the SVU fandom, Hidden Agenda, Alex/Olivia, BDSM, NC-17.
